To get a better understanding of the hostility between these two English heavyweights, you’d have to go back to the industrial revolution in the 19th century.
As the two leading cities in the north west of England, Manchester and Liverpool were both flourishing before the completion of the Manchester shipping canal.
That ruined a close relationship between the industrial centres for good, creating a job crisis in Liverpool, and laid the foundation for the upcoming football rivalry between their two most prominent representatives.
Man United and Liverpool are the two most successful clubs in England, boasting a staggering 132 major trophies combined, while their popularity at home and abroad is off the charts.
Before it was rebranded as the Premier League in 1992, the First Division, as it was known back then, witnessed unparalleled dominance from Liverpool, who registered 18 of their 19 top-flight titles in that time.
The Red Devils established themselves as a supreme force throughout the 1960s, yet their triumphant 1967 season would be their solitary success for 26 years.
The Reds reasserted themselves in domestic football during the 1980s, racking up seven titles and two European cups, with Man Utd largely lagging behind before the arrival of a manager called Alex Ferguson.
Under Ferguson’s guidance, United turned the tables on Liverpool, securing six titles in the early Premier League era.
By the time the Scottish manager relinquished his post in 2013, Man United had left the Reds in the dust, overtaking their record of 18 league crowns by winning 20 themselves.

The Reds were 1-0 down at half-time at Anfield, with Gerrard starting the game on the bench, only to enter the fray at the beginning of the second half and receive a straight red card 38 seconds after coming on.
Ander Herrera tackled the Reds skipper, who retailed by tamping on him, earning his marching orders in less than a minute since being brought on.
