Arsenal scrap plans for major expansion of Emirates Stadium

Arsenal have scrapped plans to expand the Emirates Stadium, according to the Times.

They had considered ways to increase their stadium’s capacity to 80,000.

However, they have decided against pursuing a large-scale redevelopment, which would have been extremely costly.

The club will focus on improving hospitality, retail, visitor facilities and the overall matchday experience.

Manager Mikel Arteta, who led Arsenal to the Premier League title last season, played a major role in the decision.

A major expansion could have forced the club to relocate temporarily, and Arteta did not want to disrupt his team’s success by playing home games elsewhere.

The Emirates was the biggest Premier League ground in London when Arsenal moved from Highbury in 2006.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium surpassed theirs in size, facilities and earning potential after it opened in 2019.

Arsenal have consistently performed at a high level and competed for major trophies in recent seasons.

Demand for tickets has been very high, prompting the club’s hierarchy to consider ways to increase the capacity.

Due to cost and logistical reasons, Arsenal have decided on a ‘continued evolution’ of the stadium instead of a large-scale revamp.
