Barcelona wanted to sign Manchester City star Josko Gvardiol

Barcelona explored a move to sign Josko Gvardiol from Manchester City this summer, per Mundo Deportivo.

The Blaugrana identified the 24-year-old as an ideal signing to strengthen their backline.

Barcelona were attracted by his ability to play as a centre-back and a left-back.

They also admired his physicality, defensive resilience and composure when bringing the ball out from the back.

However, Gvardiol had no desire to leave City. They regarded him as an untouchable asset.

The Croatian ended speculation over his future in Manchester by signing a new contract until 2031 in July.

Gvardiol joined Man City from RB Leipzig in 2023 for £77.6 million.

He established himself as a key first-team player under former manager Pep Guardiola.

Gvardiol’s position has not changed after Enzo Maresca’s appointment.

The left-back has started all five Premier League matches this season, making three direct goal contributions.

Barcelona invested heavily to sign Anthony Gordon, Rodri, Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus this summer.

They also needed reinforcements in defence after Ronald Araujo left the club to join Liverpool on loan.

After failing to sign Gvardiol, the La Liga giants also explored a deal for Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, but nothing materialised.
