Premier League clubs are exploring legal action against Manchester City after they were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of financial regulations.
Several clubs have already sought legal advice on potential compensation claims.
Law firms have previously approached Premier League clubs, explaining that they could pursue damages if City were found to have broken the league’s rules.
The case could now have major financial implications for City, although any legal claims have to wait until the appeals process is complete.
City are expected to challenge the commission’s findings over the 114 breaches, which relate to allegations between 2009 and 2018.
One possible avenue for rival clubs would be to argue that City’s alleged rule-breaking affected their own sporting and financial prospects.
Some clubs could seek compensation if they can demonstrate that they missed out on Champions League qualification because of City’s conduct.
Others could point to lost sponsorship bonuses or other financial opportunities.
A collective legal action is also possible, with multiple Premier League clubs potentially joining forces to seek damages, and a precedent already exists.
An independent commission ordered Everton to pay Burnley £35.1 million in June.
They ruled that Everton’s breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules during the 2021/22 season gave them a sporting advantage.
If clubs can establish financial losses linked to City’s alleged breaches, they could have a case.
Premier League clubs are now assessing how City’s case may have affected their own financial position.
Man City insist the Premier League process is not yet complete and stressed their commitment to due process.
City say they expect the Premier League to act as an independent and impartial regulator as the case moves to its next stage.
