Lionel Messi scores 100th Inter Miami goal in Campeones Cup final win

Lionel Messi scored his 100th club goal as Inter Miami defeated Cruz Azul 2-0 to claim the 2026 Campeones Cup last night.

The Herons had won just one of their previous nine games before Wednesday’s annual showdown between the reigning champions of Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX.

They bounced back with a 2-0 triumph against Cruz Azul at the Nu Stadium, sealing their first trophy of the season.

Messi reached a milestone of 100 goals for Miami when he headed home a pinpoint cross from Luis Suarez in the 24th minute.

The Argentine appeared to have doubled their advantage early in the second half after a brilliant through ball from Suarez, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

The 39-year-old then set up Casemiro, who nodded the ball low to the far post in the 81st minute, sealing a memorable victory in front of their home crowd.

Messi is one of the top contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award after playing a crucial role in Argentina’s run to the World Cup final, where they eventually lost to Spain.

He bagged eight goals and four assists in seven starts for the national team, including a hat-trick against Algeria in their opening group game.

Messi has scored 23 goals in 27 appearances for Miami across all competitions this season.
