Liverpool must end home struggles and compound Tottenham’s woes

Liverpool face Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the League Cup at Anfield on Tuesday.

The Reds were held to a goalless draw by Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday, leaving them with just one win in three home games this season.

Manager Andoni Iraola has hinted that he will make changes to the side that started against Fulham.

Regardless of the number of changes, Iraola will be pushing for a positive response from his side.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 17 home games against Tottenham across all competitions and have started the season better, making them strong favourites for this clash.

The Merseyside giants are also unbeaten in the third round of the League Cup since a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in 2018.

The host need to create high-quality chances and control the tempo to feed off the energy of their raucous home support, which has been largely lacking at Anfield this season.

Tottenham have endured a difficult start to the campaign, winning just one of their five fixtures across all competitions.

They are one of the two sides yet to score in the Premier League, but scored five goals against Charlton Athletic in the previous round of the competition.

Spurs have kept two clean sheets in their last two league fixtures, suggesting defensive improvement, but they need to replicate that form at the other end.

The visitors can hurt Liverpool in transition and can exploit the vulnerabilites of their full-backs.

A victory at Anfield would be a turning point for Roberto de Zerbi’s side.
