Pro Ref admits error in Erling Braut Haaland’s controversial Manchester derby winner as Man City beat Man United

Professional referees’ body Pro Ref has admitted that an error was made in allowing Erling Braut Haaland’s controversial winner to stand as Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0.

Haaland settled a dramatic 199th Manchester derby in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, finishing Josko Gvardiol’s cross to secure three points for City.

Despite Enzo Maresca’s side playing with 10 men for most of the contest, they held on for the win.

However, the goal immediately sparked furious debate after Enzo Fernandez was positioned offside during the build-up.

He appeared to attempt to play the ball and was also close to United defenders, with Senne Lammens seemingly expecting him to make contact before Haaland eventually finished.

VAR reviewed the incident and inexplicably concluded that Fernandez had not interfered with play, allowing the goal to stand.

Man Utd manager Michael Carrick was particularly furious with the decision, describing the alleged error as ‘obvious’.

Pro Ref spokesperson said (via Simon Stone): “The on-field decision was offside against Erling Braut Haaland – that was checked by VAR, and he was found to be in an onside position.

“In the same attack, it was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective.

“However, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.

“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place.”

The admission does little for United because Haaland’s goal ultimately made the difference between the two sides.

United should have made their numerical advantage count after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the first half following his clash with Bruno Fernandes.

However, City remained disciplined and produced an impressive defensive display to protect their lead.

Fernandez was also central to City’s resilience, dominating midfield alongside Elliot Anderson as the visitors refused to surrender control despite their disadvantage.

The result keeps City unbeaten under Maresca and level on points with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

United are left to rue another frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford. The officiating controversy will be difficult for Carrick to ignore.
