Lionel Messi scores for Inter Miami, but Nashville strike late to secure draw

Lionel Messi scored against Nashville SC in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

The experienced forward bagged his 99th goal for Inter Miami, but they were forced to settle for a draw after Nashville equalised in stoppage time.

Messi put his side ahead in the 62nd minute, exchanging passes with Rodrigo De Paul before scoring with a precise left-footed finish from 20 yards out.

This came after an own-goal from Reed Baker-Whiting cancelled out Sam Surridge’s opener.

Messi threatened to extend Miami’s lead, but he was denied by goalkeeper Brian Schwake’s save and a last-ditch headed clearance by Jeisson Palacios.

Nashville stunned the Nu Stadium crowd in stoppage time when Surridge equalised from close range.

The latest result leaves the Herons nine points behind Nashville in the Eastern Conference.

Messi is currently the league’s top scorer with 19 goals, but Miami have recorded just one win from their last nine games across all competitions.

Miami will aim to win their first trophy of the season when they face Cruz Azul on Wednesday in a battle between the reigning MLS champions and Liga MX champions for the Campeones Cup.
