Key Manchester United star an injury doubt for Sunday’s derby with Manchester City

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick says Luke Shaw will be assessed before deciding whether he is fit to start against Manchester City on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was forced off in the 2-2 draw with Everton last weekend. He subsequently missed the 4-0 Champions League victory against Sabah FK on Thursday.

Speaking to the media before Sunday’s derby, Carrick Shaw’s is doubtful for the City game.

He said: “We’ll have to see. We just kind of looked after him a little bit.

“He wasn’t quite ready for [Sabah] 100 percent, so we didn’t risk it. We’ll see how he is over the next couple of days or so.”

United are short of options at left-back.  They were linked with a summer move for Lewis Hall, but a transfer did not materialise.

Hall has now signed a long-term contract with Newcastle United.

Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches last season. The England international featured in the opening three league fixtures this term.

Patrick Dorgu played at left-back against Sabah. He was quite lively going forward, but he struggled defensively.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can operate on the left flank, although neither are specialists on that side of the pitch.

Harry Amass is an option, but he is unlikely to play in such a big game.

Man United have made a mixed start to the Premier League campaign, picking up four points from three matches.

City have won all three games to top the table.
