Premier League clubs will not be asked to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks this weekend, according to the Daily Mail.
English Football League (EFL) clubs will also not be asked to hold a minute’s silence or organise league-wide tributes to recognise the tragedy.
The anniversary falls on Friday, September 11, with 67 British citizens among the thousands who lost their lives in the attacks across the United States in 2001.
Despite the anniversary’s significance, there are no plans for competition-wide tributes at matches this weekend as English football changes its approach to marking major international tragedies.
Last year, the Premier League, EFL and Football Association (FA) agreed that automatic minute’s silences for global disasters would no longer be the norm after a working group claimed it was losing its impact.
League-wide tributes are now reserved for international events directly connected to football, although clubs can still organise their own tributes when they believe an occasion calls for one.
Only Manchester United and Manchester City held a minute of silence before their respective matches in tribute to the Manchester synagogue attack.
The World Events Working Group (WEWG) was created to help guide decisions made by the Premier League, EFL and FA when major events occur around the world.
It was established in 2024 after the FA was criticised following the terror attacks in Israel in 2023.
The Wembley Stadium arch was not illuminated in tribute to those attacks, despite having previously been lit in support of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.
The WEWG’s recommendations will not stop players from paying their own tributes, with gestures such as taking the knee outside the group’s remit.
This weekend’s Premier League fixtures kick off on Saturday, but West Ham United are scheduled to host Wrexham in the Championship at the London Stadium on Friday.
The Premier League is also implementing measures to crack down on tragedy chanting and has urged fans to play their part in the battle.
