Lionel Messi stars in first Miami game since Argentina retirement

Lionel Messi recently announced his retirement from international football, ending a remarkable 20-year association with the Argentina national team.

However, the 39-year-old has continued his club career with Inter Miami.

Messi impressed in his first game since retirement, helping his team seal a 2-2 draw with Atlanta United at the Nu Stadium.

The experienced forward set up Casemiro to head home the opening goal in the 32nd minute.

Miguel Almiron levelled the scores a couple of minutes later by reacting quickly after goalkeeper Dayne St Clair spilled the ball.

Miami came close to restoring their advantage when a brilliant free-kick from Messi rattled the crossbar.

Luis Suarez’s effort did the trick for Miami, as he latched onto Telasco Segovia’s pass to put them ahead on the stroke of half-time.

Miami conceded two penalties in the second half. St Clair saved the first spot-kick in the 73rd minute, but Breel Embolo converted the next one to seal a thrilling draw for Atlanta.

Messi had 61 touches and completed 87 percent of his passes. He registered six shots, made six recoveries and completed all of his long balls.

He scored four goals in the previous game against Montreal. Miami triumphed 7-1 on that occasion.

The Argentine is currently Major League Soccer’s joint-top scorer with 18 goals. He has also contributed 10 assists in 20 league matches.
