Embattled FIFA president Infantino will stand for re-election in March

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed he will stand for re-election next year.

Infantino has been under severe pressure to resign after he tried to sell stakes in FIFA tournaments to private investors.

European football’s governing body UEFA has led calls for the Swiss administrator to step down from his position.

CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have also been highly critical of his proposal to sell World Cup stakes.

Despite the huge controversy surrounding his leadership, Infantino has reiterated his desire to stand for re-election in March.

If Infantino is re-elected, he will serve until 2031.

Infantino’s controversial proposal involved creating a new entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to manage the commercial and operational rights of the competitions.

The plan was to retain majority control of the entity while allowing private firms to purchase minority stakes.

Its purported aim was to increase funding for football development through its member associations.

However, Infantino was forced to scrap the controversial plan following a huge backlash across the sport.

FIFA initially vowed to continue with its proposals despite strong statements of rejection from UEFA and CONCACAF.

However, the 56-year-old needed the support of a majority of member associations to pass the plans, and that became unlikely when the AFC also opposed them.
