Arsenal launched a late move for Lautaro Martinez as an alternative to Julian Alvarez and Victor Osimhen

Arsenal explored a late move for Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez after realising they wouldn’t be able to sign Julian Alvarez or Victor Osimhen.

The Daily Mail claims that assistant manager Gabriel Heinze reached out to Martinez to gauge his interest in joining the London club.

Inter refused to entertain any offers for their star forward, who has been with them since 2018.

The 29-year-old has been a consistent performer, scoring 175 goals in 378 appearances across all competitions.

Inter are in a strong position regarding Martinez’s future, with his contract not expiring until 2029.

Arsenal initially targeted a move for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.

They were willing to consider a big offer from the Premier League champions, but Alvarez made it clear he only wanted a move to Barcelona.

Atletico firmly refused to negotiate with their La Liga rivals and the Argentine decided to stay at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Arsenal also explored a blockbuster move for Victor Osimhen, but a transfer didn’t materialise due to the financial costs involved.

They have made some top-quality additions this summer, including Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.

However, they failed to sign a game-changing attacker who could elevate their squad.

The Gunners have made a strong start to their title defence. They thrashed Coventry City 3-0 before winning 1-0 at Aston Villa 1-0.
