Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala reveals ‘neurological dysfunction’ diagnosis after second on-pitch collapse

Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala has revealed that he is receiving treatment for a ‘neurological dysfunction’ after fainting during two pre-season matches within four days.

Musiala passed out during Bayern’s friendly against RB Leipzig in Munich on Saturday shortly after entering the game as a substitute,

Club doctors quickly rushed onto the pitch to attend to him, and his teammates surrounded him to protect his privacy as he received treatment before eventually walking off the field.

However, his situation became even more concerning when he experienced a similar episode during Bayern’s game against Heidenheim on Tuesday.

Musiala collapsed just moments after coming on in the 69th minute. Fortunately, he was able to leave the pitch on his own, although he appeared dazed.

After the second incident, Musiala took to social media to explain what had happened and reassure concerned supporters.

“I’ve been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures, which are due to a neurological dysfunction,” he wrote (via The Athletic). 

“These can lead to the recent incidents, like the one against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim.

“I know these things might seem scary at first glance – but for me, they’re currently part of my everyday life. I’m receiving the best medical treatment and am very optimistic.”

The Bayern star also stressed that there is no further health risk and said he has been working closely with neurologists while taking responsibility for his recovery.

“Importantly, there is no further health risk,” he added.

“In close consultation and regular communication with the experts, it was my personal wish to take on this challenge and, with the clearance from the neurologists, to continue focusing on what helps me most in my recovery – simply living my everyday life and pursuing my passion for playing football. 

“I have taken responsibility for this. Overall, I have a very good feeling and am on the right track.”

Musiala’s update is a massive relief for the Bundesliga champions. It is unclear if he will face Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s German Super Cup outing.
