Football transfer fees have continued to climb in recent years, and the upward trend shows no sign of slowing down.

Intriguingly, many talented teenage players are now commanding the same fees usually associated with more experienced stars.

That point has been hammered home this summer by Real Madrid’s pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.

He could become the second most expensive teenager of all-time if Los Blancos are able to agree a fee with the Bundesliga club.

With that in mind, read on as we look at the most expensive teenagers in football transfer history, before assessing whether clubs have had value for money from their huge outlay.

Big-money teenage buys carries risks

Paying exorbitant fees for players always carries risks. Splashing the cash on unproven talents is even more fraught with danger.

Kylian Mbappe’s move from Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 was one of the most expensive football transfers of all time.

He scored 256 goals in 308 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants before joining Real Madrid on a free transfer in June 2024.

Taken in isolation, Mbappe’s goalscoring statistics are staggering. However, they only helped PSG achieve domestic success.

Since Mbappe left the French giants, they have won back-to-back Champions League titles. On that basis, the €180m fee they paid for him is hard to justify.

Atletico Madrid’s €127.2m outlay on Joao Felix is another eye-watering teenage transfer which failed to deliver the desired results.

Felix scored just 34 goals in 131 appearances for Atletico. Several temporary moves elsewhere did not improve his fortunes.

He is now plying his trade in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) and is unlikely ever to hit the levels he was initially tipped to reach.

Numerous other expensive teenagers have failed to justify their lofty price tags including Romeo Lavia, Franco Mastantuono and Tyler Dibling.

However, there have been some noteworthy success stories. PSG’s €65.92m investment in Joao Neves in 2014 immediately leaps off the page.

Neves initially made his mark with Benfica before moving to France. He has since become one of the best midfielders in the world.

His efforts alongside Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha have helped PSG become the dominant force in European football over the past two seasons.

Elsewhere, Madrid’s forays into the teenage transfer market have raised questions about their scouting set-up.

Mastantuono and Endrick have yet to show they can star for the La Liga club, although they still have plenty of time to fulfil their potential.

Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior have been more successful, justifying the combined €90m Madrid paid to secure their services.

Looking further down the list, Wayne Rooney stands out as a player who totally justified the faith Manchester United showed in him as a teenager.

His €37m fee equates to around €60m in today’s market, which would still be great value when considering what he achieved at United.

Rooney helped the club win five league titles and is the only player to have recorded both 200 goals and 100 assists in the competition.

He is United’s all-time top goalscorer with 253 goals and was the all-time English top goalscorer in the Champions League (34) from 2011 to 2024.

He is also one of two English players, alongside Michael Carrick, to have won the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, League Cup, Europa League and Club World Cup.
