Slaven Bilic set to return as Croatia manager

Slaven Bilic is set to make a sensational return as Croatia manager.

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) is preparing to officially announce him as Zlatko Dalic’s successor on Monday.

The HNS Executive Board is scheduled to meet at 1.00 pm local time, with Bilic expected to be presented to the media one hour later if his appointment receives final approval.

Before the board meeting, the federation’s Professional Commission, led by Bozidar Sikic, will meet to give the green light for the former West Ham United boss to take charge of the national team once again.

Bilic has already enjoyed a successful spell in charge of Croatia, managing the national side between 2006 and 2012. He guided the team to 42 victories and 14 draws in 65 matches.

His first tenure included an impressive run at the 2008 European Championship, where Croatia reached the quarter-finals before suffering a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat against Turkey.

However, they failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup before exiting Euro 2012 at the group stage after being drawn alongside Spain, Italy and the Republic of Ireland.

The 57-year-old will now inherit a Croatia side that has enjoyed a golden era under Dalic, who led the country to a World Cup final in 2018, a World Cup semi-final in 2022 and a Nations League final appearance.

Bilic has accepted a significantly lower salary than his predecessor, with his contract expected to be worth around €1 million in gross annual salary.

Dalic’s previous deal reportedly earned him €180,000 gross per month following his remarkable achievements with the national team.

Bilic is already focused on rebuilding and maintaining the country’s status among international football’s elite.

The new manager is expected to assemble his coaching staff after his appointment is confirmed, with longtime collaborator Dean Racunica among those linked to a place in his backroom team.

Croatia will hope Bilic can begin another successful chapter and continue the legacy established during Dalic’s remarkable eight-year reign.
