Manager Luis de la Fuente says Spain ‘have the best midfield in the world’. 

The 65-year-old made the comments in an interview with the Guardian, claiming they have two top players in every midfield position.

Given Spain’s embarrassment of riches in midfield, De la Fuente’s comments are understandable.

La Roja have Rodri, who is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. 

Operating as the ultimate anchor, the Manchester City star provides unmatched defensive stability and tactical intelligence. 

Pedri, who helped Barcelona win the 2025-26 La Liga title, offers composure under pressure, elite passing and outstanding dribbling skills. 

Add in Fabian Ruiz, Dani Olmo and Martin Zubimendi, and the 2024 European champions have the most fearsome midfielders. 

Spain came into the 2026 World Cup as the favourites but made a slow start.

They now face a challenging task against Portugal, who enter the contest with renewed purpose and belief following a thrilling 2-1 success over Croatia.
