Transfer blow for Chelsea as Granit Xhaka desires to stay at Sunderland

Chelsea have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Sunderland star Granit Xhaka.

According to Sky Sports News, the experienced midfielder is committed to the Black Cats and wishes to remain on Wearside.

Sunderland recently rejected an £8 million bid from Chelsea for Xhaka, insisting he is not for sale.

The Blues were expected to submit another offer, but it appears that Xhaka is going nowhere this summer

The defensive midfielder was initially tempted by the prospect of reuniting with his former manager Xabi Alonso at Chelsea.

But after discussions with his present club, he has changed his stance and will continue his career at the Stadium of Light.

Xhaka is currently on World Cup duty with Switzerland, who beat Algeria 2-0 to book a spot in the round of 16.

He has started all four games for the national team and scored a goal in the 4-1 win against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Xhaka joined Sunderland last summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £17 million.

He played an instrumental role in helping his club finish seventh in the Premier League to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

The former Arsenal star made 36 appearances across all competitions, with seven goal contributions to his name.

Xhaka is highly rated for his leadership qualities and boasts plenty of experience at the top level.
