Chelsea aim not-so-sly dig at Maresca for walking out to join Man City

Chelsea have released a strongly worded statement following Enzo Maresca’s appointment by Manchester City, insisting that he left Stamford Bridge of his own accord.

The Blues released a detailed statement explaining the circumstances surrounding Maresca’s departure.

Chelsea said they were left with little option but to accept his resignation midway through the 2025/26 campaign.

They first became aware in the autumn that Maresca was eager to replace Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium once the season concluded.

Despite being tied to a long-term contract, the club claim he became fully committed to pursuing the opportunity.

Chelsea say the situation came to a head in December when Maresca unexpectedly resigned from his post, leaving them scrambling for a replacement.

The club admitted the disruption played a significant role in what they described as a ‘hugely disappointing’ season, with the managerial upheaval arriving at the worst possible time.

Chelsea said they felt let down, believing that Maresca’s head and heart were focused on another club despite having taken charge only a year earlier.

Chelsea accepted his resignation, insisting they had to protect the players, supporters and the club’s identity.

The statement also confirmed that confidential settlements have been agreed with City and Maresca.

The Blues are set to receive around £17.2 million compensation.

Chelsea have now turned the page under new manager Xabi Alonso, whom the club described as an ‘exceptional football mind’ and a ‘professional of the highest integrity’.

The club are hopeful Alonso can restore stability after months of uncertainty and deliver the success supporters demand.
