Frank Lampard set to sign long-term deal with Coventry City

Frank Lampard is set to sign a new long-term deal with Coventry City ahead of their long-awaited return to the Premier League, according to the Times.

The former England international has transformed Coventry since taking charge in November 2024. 

Lampard guided the club to the Championship title with an impressive 95-point haul, ending a 25-year exile from the Premier League.

Discussions over a new agreement are at an advanced stage, with both sides keen to continue the partnership that has delivered one of the club’s most memorable seasons in recent history.

Lampard still has more than a year remaining on his current contract, but Coventry are eager to reward his success and provide stability as they prepare for the challenges of Premier League football.

The 48-year-old is reportedly heavily involved in plans for the upcoming season, working closely with owner Doug King on recruitment and the club’s strategy. 

Coventry are expected to strengthen their squad significantly this summer as they look to establish themselves in the top flight rather than simply make up the numbers.

Last season’s survivors are proof that promoted clubs can compete successfully and keep their heads above water if they invest wisely.

Sunderland defied expectations by qualifying for the Europa League in their first season back in the top flight, while Leeds United comfortably avoided relegation with a 14th-place finish.

Coventry will hope to follow a similar path and build a squad capable of handling the step up in quality and intensity that comes with Premier League football.

Lampard is already helping identify transfer targets, although not every move has gone to plan. 

The club recently had a bid worth up to £20 million rejected for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who impressed during a loan spell last season and became one of Coventry’s standout performers.

Lampard, who beat Mikel Arteta to the LMA manager of the year award, will kick off the Premier League campaign with a difficult trip to reigning champions Arsenal.

The Sky Blues will then welcome Hull City for their first home Premier League game in a quarter of a century.
