Newcastle revive interest in Man City’s James Trafford 

Newcastle United have renewed their interest in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.

The Magpies have long admired the England international and are once again exploring the possibility of bringing him to St James’ Park this summer.

Newcastle attempted to sign Trafford last year before he completed a move to Man City following two impressive seasons with Burnley.

Trafford believed he would compete for a starting role under Pep Guardiola. However, he made just 17 appearances during his first season with City.

That lack of game time has inevitably sparked speculation over his future.

Newcastle have reportedly made fresh contact with City and reiterated their interest in signing the goalkeeper.

While no formal negotiations have begun, Trafford is Newcastle’s preferred target as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department.

The club have already added young goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen following the end of Aaron Ramsdale’s loan spell, but they are still keen to recruit another senior option.

Trafford’s future could also have implications for Newcastle’s current goalkeeping hierarchy.

Nick Pope is the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, although his position could come under threat if a new signing is made this summer.

Trafford is currently focused on England’s World Cup campaign and is reluctant to make a decision on his future until after the tournament.

That could delay Newcastle’s plans as they continue preparations for next season.

Trafford came through City’s academy before gaining valuable experience during loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers.

His reputation grew significantly during his time at Burnley, where he made 73 appearances and established himself as one of England’s most promising young goalkeepers.

Speaking earlier this year, Trafford admitted that his first season back at City had not gone entirely as expected.

“It wasn’t what I expected,” he said. “I know every time I play, I’ve got to give it my best shot and try to improve.”

With Newcastle now back in the picture, Trafford’s future is likely to become one of the more closely watched goalkeeping stories of the summer transfer window.
