Liverpool’s interest in Denzel Dumfries could change after Arne Slot exit

Liverpool are exploring the market for a new right-back following Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley’s struggles with injury and form last season.

They have been credited with an interest in Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries. The Netherlands international could leave the Nerazzurri this summer.

However, journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the sacking of manager Arne Slot could affect the Reds’ pursuit of Dumfries.

Andoni Iraola is now set to replace Slot. Liverpool have reportedly reached an agreement to appoint the Spaniard as their new manager.

Liverpool should abandon Dumfries’ pursuit

Dumfries has been a consistent performer for Inter since joining from PSV Eindhoven in 2021.

The 30-year-old has won eight titles with the Nerazzurri and has been named in the Serie A Team of the Season once.

Dumfries has excelled mainly as a right-wing back, but can also be deployed at right-back.

Having played mostly at wing-back, Liverpool would be taking a huge risk by signing the Dutchman.

The Reds signed Jeremie Frimpong last summer, who also impressed as a wing-back at Bayer Leverkusen, but struggled as a full-back at the club. They risk making the same mistake by bringing in Dumfries.

The Inter defender also struggled with his fitness last season, missing 25 games due to injuries. The intensity of the Premier League could be too much for him.

Liverpool should make a move for a natural right-back with a good fitness history rather than sign Dumfries.

Atalanta’s Marco Palestra would be a better target. The 21-year-old impressed on loan at Cagliari last season, establishing himself as one of Europe’s best young right-backs.
