How should Arsenal’s season be judged after Champions League final defeat?

Arsenal lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final last night, missing the opportunity to win the competition for the first time in their history.

They were also beaten by Manchester City in the League Cup final in March, before losing to Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final quarter-final.

Arsenal were on course to win the quadruple after starting the season strongly.

They delivered impressive performances against Premier League teams and finished the Champions League group stage at the top of the standings.

They eventually won the league title, sparking debate about whether it was a successful season.

The answer should be in the affirmative. They ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League crown while reaching two finals.

Arsenal have established themselves as the leading club in England and one of the best sides in Europe.

Speaking about Mikel Arteta’s side ahead of their Champions League final meeting, PSG manager Luis Enrique said: “Without the ball, they are the best team in the world, and with it, they can score a lot.’

Arsenal now need to build on this season’s success by adding more flair to their play, particularly against the best teams.

They recorded 24.7 percent possession against PSG – the lowest in the Champions League final since the 2003/04 season. The Gunners were also outplayed by City in the League Cup final.

Arsenal must strengthen this summer. They need a new left winger to replace Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, while signing another central midfielder should be on their agenda.

The Gunners can take pride in their league triumph, despite missing out on other major trophies.
