Liverpool sack Arne Slot after 20-defeat season, Andoni Iraola favourite to replace him

Liverpool have sacked manager Arne Slot after they finished fifth in the Premier League standings.

Andoni Iraola is the favourite to replace the Dutchman.

Iraola has left Bournemouth after guiding them to European qualification for the first time. He has also been linked with Crystal Palace and AC Milan.

Slot’s exit from Liverpool was inevitable

Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, erasing the dark clouds that surrounded the club after Jurgen Klopp’s exit.

Mohamed Salah arguably enjoyed his best season under him, winning the Premier League Golden Boot and Player of the Year awards.

He also brought the best out of Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate, while several other players benefited from his arrival.

However, he failed to replicate the same this season, despite Liverpool spending heavily last summer.

The Reds broke several unwanted records this season, including their highest number of defeats (20) in a season across all competitions this century.

He also fell out with Salah, who is now set to leave the club as a free agent, while several key players suffered a huge dip in form.

There were mitigating factors, such as Diogo Jota’s death and injuries to key players, but is there is a general feeling that he should have done better.
