Manchester United spent around €19.3 million to compensate Ruben Amorim after sacking him earlier in the 2025/26 campaign, according to Portuguese news outlet Record.
The Portuguese manager joined United late in 2024, with a reputation as one of the world’s best young managers.
There were comparisons to Jose Mourinho swirling around, especially after dominating the Portuguese top flight with Sporting CP.
United were hoping he had the credentials to steer the club back to the top of English football.
However, despite plenty of investment from the board, Amorim struggled to live up to expectations and was sent packing earlier in the campaign.
His short spell at Old Trafford ended in disappointment, and the cost of his exit has now been revealed in United’s latest financial report.
United spent around €19.3 million to part ways with Amorim and his coaching staff in January.
The payout covered the departures of assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro and Jorge Vital.
The figure is far higher than many people expected and highlights the financial impact of another failed managerial project at the club.
Amorim’s spell in the United dugout came during one of the most complicated eras in the club’s history.
United struggled to get going under the young tactician, and consistency was difficult to establish.
While his squad was plagued with injuries, critics constantly questioned his tactical approach, arguing that the team lacked balance and identity on the pitch.
United eventually decided to move on from Amorim and appoint Michael Carrick as interim manager.
The former United midfielder turned things around and guided United to third place in the Premier League.
He has been appointed permanently, with the United hierarchy claiming he thoroughly earned it.
He’ll be hoping United can pick up where they left off when the new season kicks off in August.
