Barcelona sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle on a five-year deal for £69.3m

Barcelona have completed the blockbuster signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth £69.3 million.

The England international forward has signed a five-year contract at the Spotify Camp Nou.

The Catalan giants confirmed the transfer on Friday evening after a day of delays caused by final administrative checks, ending weeks of negotiations between the two clubs.

Gordon will remain at Barcelona until 2031, with Newcastle also securing a sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

The 25-year-old arrives in Spain after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most explosive forwards during his time with Newcastle.

Bayern Munich and Chelsea were both monitoring Gordon’s situation, while Arsenal and Liverpool had tracked him in previous transfer windows, but Barcelona moved decisively to sign him.

Gordon leaves Newcastle after scoring 39 goals in 152 appearances following his £40 million move from Everton in January 2023.

The England international registered 17 goals in all competitions this season, including 10 goals in 12 Champions League matches.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick reportedly pushed for the deal to add greater pace, directness and pressing intensity to his frontline.

Gordon’s versatility was another major attraction. He is capable of operating on either flank or through the middle.

The move signals Barcelona’s growing confidence in their financial position after recent progress on La Liga’s salary regulations.

The La Liga champions are expected to continue an ambitious summer rebuild, with more high-profile arrivals potentially on the horizon.

They are pushing to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva is also on their radar.

Gordon’s departure represents a major financial boost for Newcastle as they strive to reshape their squad ahead of next season.

Club officials believe selling now was the smartest long-term decision, particularly given the Magpies’ need for market flexibility after missing out on European football.
