Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White has expressed his disappointment after missing out on a spot in the England World Cup squad.
The 26-year-old was an integral part of Forest’s 2025/26 squad, playing a massive role in their relegation battle and their phenomenal run to the Europa League semi-final.
Gibbs-White sent a strong message to England manager Thomas Tuchel after the snub, reminding him of his quality in Forest’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in their final fixture.
He hit an inch-perfect free kick to give Forest the lead in the first half, although his outstanding strike was eventually cancelled out by Marcus Tavernier nine minutes into the second 45 minutes.
Gibbs-White celebrated in front of the home crowd with all ten fingers raised in the air, responding to supporters who had been chanting that he should be England’s number 10.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers attacking midfielder, who has won six caps for England, insisted that he had done enough to deserve a place in Tuchel’s squad.
Gibbs-White has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career, bagging 18 goals and seven assists in 53 games across all competitions.
He scored 15 goals in 37 Premier League games and spurred Forest to the Europa League semi-final with three goals and three assists in 14 outings.
However, it wasn’t enough to get Tuchel’s attention, and Gibbs-White couldn’t pass up the chance to express his disappointment at missing the plane to North America.
“I know myself, I have done more than enough to be in the squad,” Gibbs-White said (via The Times).
“I just got on the wrong side of someone’s opinion. I have been on the wrong side of people’s opinions throughout my career, so I’m only going to bounce back.”
Despite the disappointment, Gibbs-White’s absence from the England squad will be a huge boost for Vitor Pereira, who is already making plans for the next season.
“I know we want to keep the same players, to bring two or three players to help us balance the squad. In the end, we’ll see,” Pereira said.
