Hull City 1-0 Middlesbrough: Oli McBurnie’s late strike ends Tigers’ 10-year wait for Premier League return

Hull City dug deep to claim a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Boro created the first opening in the 15th minute when Aidan Morris dragged an effort wide.

David Strelec then sent a header wide following a cross from Alan Browne, as Boro continued to dominate proceedings.

Hull came close to breaking the deadlock against the run of play on the stroke of half-time, with Oli McBurnie hitting the woodwork.

Boro responded in first-half stoppage time. Morgan Whittaker combined with Strelec, whose effort drifted narrowly wide.

Middlesbrough picked up where they left off before the interval. They had a corner cleared before Dael Fry headed over from the follow-up.

Matt Crooks headed wide before Mohamed Belloumi stung the palms of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Solomon Brynn as Hull grew into the contest.

Sontje Hansen almost gave Boro the lead in the 80th minute with a low shot, forcing goalkeeper Ivor Pandur to make a superb save. However, the Boro substitute was eventually deemed offside.

Hull’s Joe Gelhardt fired a shot narrowly wide as both sides kept pushing for the winning goal before full-time.

McBurnie settled the game in stoppage time, sealing the Tigers’ return to the Premier League for the first time in ten years.
