‘Thoroughly earned it’: Jason Wilcox explains why Man United appointed Carrick as new manager

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as their new manager.

Carrick was appointed on an interim basis in January following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.

The former England midfielder has impressed, guiding United to Champions League qualification with three games to spare.

No side has collected more points than United in the Premier League since he was appointed. He has been nominated for the Manager of the Season award.

Director of football Jason Wilcox has revealed the reason behind Carrick’s appointment.

He told the club’s official website: “Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team.

In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history.

“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated.

“He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build.”

The Mancunian giants now need to back Carrick in this summer’s transfer window to build on the improvement they have recorded under him this season.

They have to strengthen the midfield to compensate for Casemiro’s departure and meet the demands of domestic and European football next season.

United have been linked with several midfielders. Elliot Anderson, who has just been named in England’s World Cup squad, is one of their priority targets.

United also need to sign a new left-back to compete with Luke Shaw, while they could need another versatile forward.
