Liverpool identify Andoni Iraola as potential replacement for Arne Slot

Liverpool are expected to review Arne Slot’s future at the end of the season and are already exploring the market for a replacement if they sack him.

They are considering Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola as his potential successor, according to Foot Mercato.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is pushing for Iraola, having been responsible for his appointment at Bournemouth.

The Spaniard is set to leave the Cherries when his contract expires at the end of the season.

He was previously linked with Chelsea, but they have appointed Xabi Alonso. Crystal Palace are considering him as Oliver Glasner’s replacement.

Iraola could be ideal for Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has called for the return of ‘heavy metal‘ football at Liverpool – a playing style associated with Jurgen Klopp and one that Iraola is renowned for.

Only Liverpool and Chelsea have had more shots from fast breaks than the Cherries in the Premier League since Iraola was appointed.

During that time, no team has moved the ball upfield faster than Bournemouth, averaging 1.96 metres per second.

They rank fifth for high turnovers, third for shot-ending high turnovers and fourth for goal-ending high turnovers.

Only three teams have a lower passes allowed per defensive action tally than Bournemouth’s 10.5, underlining his proactive style.

Iraola has guided Bournemouth to their first-ever European qualification and there is a strong feeling that he would thrive further with better resources.
