Freiburg 0-3 Aston Villa: Morgan Rogers makes history as Villa end European title drought

Aston Villa secured a 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the Europa League final at the Tupras Stadium on Wednesday, ending their 44-year wait for a European title.

Manager Unai Emery clinched a record-extending fifth Europa League title on a memorable night in Istanbul.

Freiburg were the first to threaten, with Igor Matanovic heading over. Morgan Rogers had a chance at the other end, but goalkeeper Noah Atubolu thwarted his effort.

Youri Tielemans gave Villa the lead in the 41st minute, running onto Rogers’ cross and volleying brilliantly into the bottom corner.

Emiliano Buendia doubled Villa’s advantage with another superb goal in first-half stoppage time. He received a pass from John McGinn and curled the ball into the top corner.

Buendia almost added to the Villans’ tally after the break. He tried to produce an outrageous lob from outside the area, but Atubolu denied him.

Villa created another chance as Tielemans delivered a cross into the box, but Ollie Watkins could not hit the target.

Rogers made it 3-0 in the 57th minute, sprinting ahead of his marker to poke Buendia’s low cross home.

The midfielder became the youngest Englishman to score in a major European final since Steven Gerrard for Liverpool in 2001.

Buendia fluffed a good chance to add a fourth for Villa in the 75th minute after getting on the end of Tielemans’ exquisite pass, but he hit the side netting.

Emiliano Martinez made a good save late on, ensuring Villa ran out 3-0 winners.
