Aston Villa face Freiburg in the Europa League final at the Tupras Stadium on Wednesday.
Villa finished second in the league phase after winning seven of their eight games. They subsequently defeated Lille 3-0 on aggregate in the round of 16.
They then thrashed Bologna 7-1 in the quarter-final, setting up a meeting with Nottingham Forest in the semi-final. They defeated the Tricky Trees 4-1 on aggregate to secure a final berth.
Freiburg also finished in the top eight of the league phase.
They claimed a 5-2 victory over Genk in the round of 16, thrashed Celta Vigo 6-1 in the quarter-final, before edging Braga 4-3 over two legs in the semi-final.
What is at stake?
Villa are seeking to win their first European title since 1982. They beat German giants Bayern Munich the last time they tasted European success.
Victory over Freiburg would also mark the Villans’ first major title since 1995/96, when they won the League Cup.
Villa have already qualified for the Champions League. A victory in Istanbul would crown a brilliant season.
Freiburg are bidding for their first-ever European success and a major trophy. Victory would secure Freiburg their first-ever Champions League qualification.
Emery eyes immortality, Schuster targets legacy
Emery has transformed Villa from relegation candidates into consistent European contenders despite financial constraints.
The Spaniard now has the opportunity to end Villa’s 30-year wait for a major trophy to cement his legacy at the club.
He has previously won the Europa League four times, making him the most successful manager in the competition’s history.
Villa are the favourites to win Wednesday’s showdown, but must be wary of Julian Schuster’s men.
Schuster joined Freiburg in 2024 and guided them to Europa League qualification in his debut season.
Freiburg were unable to replicate last season’s domestic success this term, finishing seventh and securing a Europa Conference League spot.
However, the German could finish the season on a high by beating Villa to clinch Champions League qualification.
