Southampton expelled from the Championship play-offs after Middlesbrough ‘Spygate’ scandal

Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-offs after admitting to multiple breaches of filming training sessions.

Middlesbrough will now replace Saints in Saturday’s final against Hull City. There are reportedly serious doubts over the future of Southampton senior staff.

The scandal has dominated English football over the past week, reminiscent of a similar issue with Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa.

The situation erupted after Middlesbrough accused Southampton of sending a staff member to record training sessions ahead of the Championship play-off semi-final.

The Saints faced the possibility of expulsion if found guilty by an independent commission.

The English Football League (EFL) charged Southampton under regulations relating to good faith between clubs and rules that explicitly prohibit observing an opponent’s training session within 72 hours of a fixture.

Southampton admitted to several breaches involving Middlesbrough, Oxford United and Ipswich Town.

They have been hit with immediate expulsion from the play-offs and a four-point deduction heading into the 2026/27 Championship season.

Middlesbrough, who lost 2-1 on aggregate after extra time to Southampton in the semi-finals, have now been reinstated.

They will face Hull City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday for a place in the Premier League. The decision is expected to spark a huge debate across the football world.

While some people will argue the punishment is unprecedentedly harsh, the EFL clearly felt the integrity of the competition had been compromised.

Southampton are reportedly preparing an appeal. However, one of the most extraordinary stories in Championship history has completely transformed the promotion race.

It is worth noting that the EFL fined Leeds £200,000 for the infamous controversy involving Bielsa in 2019.

However, FIFA’s six-point deduction imposed on Canada Women for using drones to spy on New Zealand at the Paris Olympics was reportedly the benchmark this time.
