Real Madrid in negotiations with Antonio Rudiger over contract extension

Real Madrid are in talks with Antonio Rudiger over a new contract.

The German international is currently entering the final weeks of his existing deal, meaning he would become a free agent at the end of the season if no agreement is reached.

Discussions between the two parties are ongoing, and there is a growing expectation within the club that a resolution could be reached within the next week.

Rudiger is expected to remain at Madrid next season, especially with Jose Mourinho increasingly expected to return as manager.

Madrid’s long-standing policy regarding players over the age of 30 means Rudiger is likely to receive only a one-year extension if an agreement is finalised.

Despite enduring an injury-hit season, Rudiger remains highly valued internally because of his leadership and influence within a squad that has often lacked authority during a disappointing campaign.

The 33-year-old has struggled with knee and hamstring problems, limiting him to 18 La Liga appearances and seven Champions League matches.

Madrid are set to finish without major silverware for a second successive campaign after once again falling behind Barcelona in the league title race and suffering disappointment in Europe.

The former Chelsea defender has made 182 appearances since joining Madrid on a free transfer in 2022.

He has won eight trophies during his time in Spain, including the Champions League and La Liga double in the 2023/24 season.

Club officials are also aware that losing Rudiger this summer would create another major problem in a defensive department already facing uncertainty.

Dani Carvajal is leaving the club, while injuries have continued to affect Eder Militao. There are concerns over the long-term reliability of several defenders in the squad.

Madrid will strengthen defensively this summer, and retaining Rudiger would avoid the need for another expensive signing during a rebuild.

Rudiger is also expected to be an important figure for Germany at this summer’s World Cup, where he is likely to be included in the squad despite his recent fitness struggles.
