Gary Neville says Mohamed Salah ‘threw a grenade’ with Liverpool comments aimed at Arne Slot

Mohamed Salah recently aimed a dig at manager Arne Slot following Liverpool’s struggles this season.

Liverpool are set to end the campaign trophyless and risk missing out on Champions League qualification.

Salah said in a social media post that he wants the club to go ‘back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies’.

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville said Salah’s comments had crossed a line.

He told Sky Sports: “He’s pulled the pin out of a grenade and thrown it in the middle of the room. If it were a Man United player, I would be fuming.

“What you cannot do with this type of character is keep him quiet. If they have to say something at a point, they will say it, even if you don’t want to hear it. It was a telling comment.”

However, he went on to throw his support behind the Dutch manager despite calls for him to be sacked.

“I genuinely believe a manager who won the league 12 months ago should have another opportunity to get it right after a challenging season,” he added.

Salah’s post has fuelled speculation over dressing-room unrest

Several players appear to agree with the forward’s assessment of the club.

Hugo Ekitike, Andy Robertson, and Dominik Szoboszlai were among the players who liked the post.

Slot will find it difficult to change the Reds’ fortunes without the players’ support.

The Merseyside giants have produced underwhelming performances this term, with several key players falling below their usual standards.

Slot needs to get Liverpool back to playing with vigour and purpose to regain the trust of the dressing room.

He will be hoping they end the season positively by beating Brentford at Anfield next Sunday, a result could secure their Champions League qualification.
