Seamus Coleman to call time on 17-year Everton career at the end of the season

Everton have confirmed that Seamus Coleman will leave the club at the end of the season, closing the chapter on a remarkable 17-year spell.

Coleman is expected to make his final home appearance against Sunderland on Sunday, giving him a chance to say ‘goodbye’ to the supporters who have watched him give everything to the club.

In a heartfelt statement, Coleman thanked Everton fans for their support throughout his career. 

He spoke about the deep connection he built with the city and explained how important it was for him to remind younger players what Everton truly means to the supporters.

Coleman said: “After more than 17 years at this great football club, I’ve decided this season will be my last as a player here.

“I want to thank the fans for their unbelievable support. You’ve helped me in more ways than you could imagine. I’ve always tried my best to put Everton first, and you all mean the world to me. 

“I live in the city – I see you all daily – and I’ve taken your love of the football club back into the dressing room to explain to the lads how much Everton means to the people.”

Coleman also confirmed that Everton have offered him a role at the club, but he wants to take the summer to mull over what the future holds.

“The club have been unbelievable with me,” he added. “They’ve offered me an opportunity to stay on at the football club. 

“The manager and staff have been great, and I think with it being such an important decision over my future, I’m going to take a nice, long holiday and look back on what has been an amazing time as an Everton footballer.”

Coleman joined Everton from Sligo Rovers in 2009 for £60,000. That turned out to be one of the best bargains in Premier League history.

He succeeded Phil Jagielka as captain in 2019 and has made nearly 450 appearances for the club.
