Julian Nagelsmann recalls Manuel Neuer as Germany number one for 2026 World Cup

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has decided to recall Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Neuer is set to be the first-choice goalkeeper, replacing TSG Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann, who was between the posts during the World Cup qualifiers.

The 40-year-old had retired from international football in 2024, after Germany lost to Spain in the European Championship quarter-final.

Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen was tipped to become his successor, but he has been struggling with injuries, allowing Baumann to break into the starting line-up.

However, the Hoffenheim shot-stopper has not fully convinced, and Nagelsmann has now decided to recall Neuer.

He has played a significant role in Bayern’s Bundesliga triumph and their run to the Champions League semi-final, where they lost to holders Paris Saint-Germain.

His experience and leadership could be key for Germany as they seek to make a deep run in this summer’s World Cup.

Neuer holds the record for the most appearances by a German player in an international tournament. He achieved the milestone at Euro 2024.

He was part of the Die Mannschaft side that won the 2014 World Cup. He was named as the country’s Footballer of the Year after his heroics at the tournament.

Germany have been drawn in Group E, alongside Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Curacao. They are seeking to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since 2014.
