Pundit blasts Alexis Mac Allister for trying to get Ezri Konsa sent off in Liverpool defeat at Aston Villa

Aston Villa claimed a 4-2 home win over Liverpool to book their place in the Champions League next season.

The Villains found a second gear to defeat the Reds, sealing the deal with goals from Ollie Watkins (2), Morgan Rogers and John McGinn.

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk tried to lead a resurgence, but his teammates failed to support him.

Alexis Mac Allister was guilty of attempting to gain a cheap advantage. The Argentine tried to get Ezri Konsa sent off on a corner following a grab on the shirt that he exaggerated.

Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was appalled.

He said (via the Daily Mail): “He does that every game. Embarrassing. Get him up. I’d be embarrassed if they sent Konsa off for that.”

No penalty was awarded for the accident, and things went from bad to worse when Villa scored moments later to make it 3-1.

Mac Allister had another poor game, failing to control proceedings or make a telling contribution. The Villains easily ran through the Liverpool midfield.

Carragher also touched on Ibrahima Konate’s positioning before claiming that Liverpool are poor in and out of possession.

The Reds have conceded more than 50 goals in a 38-game Premier League campaign for the first time (52).

Excluding penalties, they have conceded the most goals from set-pieces in the Premier League this season (20).

Despite Liverpool fans walking out on the team again, the club hierarchy wants to retain manager Arne Slot.

It is particularly frustrating for fans as they watch Xabi Alonso edge closer to joining Chelsea.

The Spanish tactician has a bright future, and his work with Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz in the Bundesliga makes him the perfect man to get the best of the pair.

The Liverpool hierarchy is taking a big gamble by sticking with Slot and will need to be wiser in the market to make it worthwhile.
