Southampton ‘Spygate’ hearing scheduled to take place on or before May 19

Southampton could be kicked out of the Championship play-off final, with the English Football League (EFL) to decide their fate in the coming days.

According to The Independent, the EFL has scheduled a new date for the ‘Spygate case, which is now set to be heard on or before May 19.

Despite the ongoing investigation, the league is still preparing for Southampton to face Hull City at Wembley Stadium four days later.

The ‘Spygate’ case has become one of the biggest talking points in English football.

Southampton were charged following allegations that a club analyst spied on semi-final opponents Middlesbrough before their play-off clash.

The incident breached EFL rules and has now triggered disciplinary proceedings that could have major consequences.

Southampton drew the first leg 0-0 away from home before securing a 2-1 win at St Mary’s to book their place in the final.

However, that achievement now hangs in the balance as the club prepares to appear before an independent disciplinary commission.

Possible punishments could range from a points deduction to complete removal from the play-offs if the club is found guilty.

Middlesbrough are reportedly pushing for strong sporting sanctions, while manager Kim Hellberg has openly accused Southampton of cheating during the tie.

There is also growing speculation that Middlesbrough could be reinstated if Southampton are expelled.

The club is already making preparations in case it is called upon to replace Saints in the Wembley final.

Tickets for the final are set to go on sale, but fans have been advised to be cautious about making travel and accommodation arrangements until the disciplinary process is complete.

“The EFL continues to plan on the basis that the Championship play-off final will take place as scheduled on Saturday, May 23, with the kick-off time confirmed as 4.30 pm,” the EFL statement read.

“Supporters should, however, be aware that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings may yet result in changes to the fixture.

“The EFL has a number of contingency plans should they be required, which also includes consideration of any appeal process, if required.

“The league recognises that this complex situation has caused concern and disruption for supporters, particularly those making travel arrangements, and will continue to provide as much clarity as possible.”
