Burnley 2-2 Aston Villa: Relegated Clarets dent Villans’ Champions League push

Aston Villa were held to a 2-2 draw by relegated Burnley in the Premier League at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The visitors dominated the opening exchanges and nearly opened the scoring in the third minute. John McGinn found Morgan Rogers, but his effort went wide.

Despite Villa’s early dominance, the hosts struck first in the eighth minute when Emiliano Martinez parried Lesley Ugochukwu’s effort into Jaidon Anthony’s path. He converted from close range.

Ian Maatsen could’ve restored parity for the visitors, but his effort from the edge of the area drifted wide.

Youri Tielemans forced Max Wiess into a fine save with a long-range strike as Villa continued to probe.

Ollie Watkins thought he had equalised for Villa with a header from Rogers’ cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Wiess was called into action again as he palmed away Ross Barkley’s effort.

Barkley made no mistake from the resulting corner as he powered home a header from McGinn’s delivery to level the scores for Villa.

Burnley nearly went back in front early in the second half when Hannibal Mejbri found Flemming, but he dragged his shot off target.

Ollie Watkins put Villa in front in the 56th minute after latching onto Emiliano Martinez’s long ball and calmly finishing past Wiess.

The Clarets hit back just three minutes later as Hannibal picked out Flemming, who slotted past Martinez to level the scores.

McGinn squandered a gilt-edged chance, heading wide from point-blank range after Lucas Digne’s cross, before Wiess denied Emiliano Buendia.

Villa missed the chance to leapfrog Liverpool into fourth place. They are four points clear of Bournemouth with two games remaining.
