Arsenal crush West Ham’s survival hopes and seal top-flight status for Leeds and Forest

Arsenal claimed a 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers should have broken the deadlock in the 78th minute, when Mateus Fernandes was slipped through, but David Raya denied him from close range.

Fernandes’ miss proved costly as Leandro Trossard scored the winner, slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

The hosts thought they had salvaged a draw when substitute Callum Wilson rifled a shot into the net, but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

The Hammers missed the chance to climb out of the relegation zone. They could be four points adrift of safety if Tottenham Hotspur beat Leeds United on Monday.

Leeds and Nottingham Forest have now secured their top-flight status. They are seven points clear of West Ham, with two games left.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side face Newcastle United (A) and Leeds (H) in their last two games. They must secure maximum points and hope Tottenham slip up to avoid relegation.

Arsenal are now five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table. City recorded a 3-0 home victory over Brentford on Saturday.

City will hope to keep applying the pressure when they welcome Crystal Palace to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Victories over Burnley and Palace in their final two fixtures would hand Arsenal the league title for the first time since the 2003/04 season.
