Sunderland 0-0 Manchester United: Resilient Black Cats hold Red Devils to stalemate

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by Sunderland in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

The hosts created the opening opportunity when Noah Sadiki met Enzo Le Fee’s through ball, only to be thwarted by Senne Lammens.

United responded with Amad Diallo firing wide from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick. Lammens quickly came off his line to deny Brian Brobbey at the other end.

The Black Cats appealed for a penalty after Diallo handled the ball in the area, but referee Stuart Attwell’s decision to wave play on was upheld following a VAR review.

Joshua Zirkzee spurned a golden chance to put United ahead, heading over from Matheus Cunha’s inviting cross.

Shortly after the restart, Granit Xhaka tried his luck from distance but sent his effort well over the bar.

Lammens was called into action once more, producing another crucial save to deny Brobbey and keep the Red Devils in the game.

The hosts came within inches of opening the scoring in the 71st minute as Brobbey set up Lutsharel Geertruida, whose effort struck the post.

United failed to register a shot on target until stoppage time, when Robin Roefs comfortably gathered Cunha’s effort.

United remain in third place, having secured Champions League qualification last weekend. Sunderland are 12th with two games to go.
