El Clasico 264: Barcelona can seal La Liga title against crisis-hit Real Madrid

One of the most heavily anticipated fixtures in the European calendar pits runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona against Real Madrid in the 264th edition of the iconic El Clasico.

Avoiding defeat is all that Barcelona need to retain the title, following a late 2-1 win at Osasuna last weekend that extended their unbeaten league run to 10 games.

Los Blaugranas will likely be keen to seal their 29th title in style and maintain their flawless home record in La Liga this season, having won all 17 home outings.

Madrid’s win would only delay the inevitable, with Los Blancos trailing their eternal rivals by a whopping 11 points ahead of the final four rounds despite beating Espanyol 2-0 a week ago.

Plagued by training-ground altercations and criticism of Kylian Mbappe’s unprofessional behaviour, the record-time Spanish champions are staring down the barrel of a rare trophyless season.

Despite Federico Valverde’s feeble attempt to quash rumours about his bust-up with Aurelien Tchouameni, there is trouble in paradise, with manager Alvaro Arbeloa unable to deal with the crisis.

Internal tensions are the last thing Madrid need ahead of a clash of this magnitude, especially with Barcelona closing in on their record of 36 league titles.

Chance to turn the tide

There’s no better place than Camp Nou to help Barcelona turn around their miserable recent record against Madrid in La Liga, having won just two of the last six league meetings between the sides on home turf (D1, L3).

However, Los Blaugranas came out on top when it mattered most, squeaking past Arbeloa’s side in January’s Supercopa de Espana final to avenge a 2-1 defeat in October’s reverse fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu.

With momentum firmly on their side, Flick’s charges will be confident about beating Madrid in back-to-back league showdowns at home for the first time since 2015.

Flick will be without star winger Lamine Yamal, who suffered a season-ending injury against Celta Vigo a fortnight ago. Wojciech Szczesny praised the youngster’s impact in his recent interview with Marca.

Despite the 18-year-old’s absence, Barcelona’s attack still looks formidable. They have scored an impressive 89 goals this season – 19 more than their upcoming rivals.

Downtrodden powerhouse

Madrid are likely to do everything to postpone their rivals’ celebration and salvage some pride from an otherwise disappointing campaign by spoiling the party at Camp Nou.

Given their patchy form and off-field turmoil, it’s no wonder they head into proceedings as underdogs, seeking a first set of consecutive away league wins since February.

Los Merengues ended an underwhelming run of three successive away games without a win (D1, L2) last weekend, marking their first clean sheet on the road since mid-February.

However, the size of these occasions is hardly comparable, especially considering Arbeloa’s charges have failed to keep Barcelona at bay in any of their last five league meetings on this ground.

A glimmer of hope stems from Madrid’s nine-game unbeaten run in away league matches on a Sunday (W6, D3), although their last such defeat came in this corresponding fixture last season.

Team news

In addition to Yamal, whose return for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains a major doubt, Barcelona will also be without long-term absentee Andreas Christensen.

As for Madrid, Mbappe is facing a race against time to regain full fitness, with Arda Guler, Ferland Mendy, Rodrigo, Eder Militao, and Thibaut Courtois sidelined with injuries.

Valverde is unlikely to feature after being admitted to the hospital following his brawl with Tchouameni, whose status at the club has come under heavy scrutiny.
