Arne Slot explains Rio Ngumoha’s substitution against Chelsea

Manager Arne Slot has defended his decision to substitute Rio Ngumoha during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ngumoha produced another impressive display during another disappointing performance for the Reds.

The teenager assisted Liverpool’s only goal, picking up possession after Dominic Szoboszlai’s free-kick was blocked. He teed up Ryan Gravenberch, who curled home with a powerful strike.

The teenager was replaced by striker Alexander Isak – a decision that was met with boos from a section of the home fans.

Slot has now confirmed that the substitution was due to cramps.

He told Liverpool’s official website: “No, not injured. He had cramps before that, three minutes [before], where he went to the floor.

“Then I had contact with him, and he said that it was enough, so that’s why I took him off.”

Despite the substitution, Ngumoha won more duels (six), made more ball recoveries (five) and completed more take-ons (four) than any other Liverpool player.

The England youth international has bagged two goals and one assist in 17 league games this season.

Liverpool head into Friday’s clash at Aston Villa with uncertainty surrounding the fitness of key players.

Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker are all doubtful for the trip to the Midlands after missing the Chelsea clash.

However, Slot has confirmed that Salah and Alisson are close to returning.

Ngumoha and Ibrahima Konate, who also came off due to cramps against Chelsea, are expected to be fit.

Liverpool and Villa are battling to secure Champions League qualification, raising the stakes for the game.

The Villans could still qualify for the competition if they drop out of the top five, provided they win the Europa League.
