Nottingham Forest produced a stunning result at Stamford Bridge as a heavily rotated side secured a 3-1 victory over Chelsea to boost their Premier League survival hopes today.
Forest manager Vítor Pereira made multiple changes with European commitments in mind, but his side delivered a performance that exposed Chelsea’s ongoing struggles.
The visitors made a perfect start, taking the lead inside two minutes through Taiwo Awoniyi.
Chelsea attempted to respond but lacked urgency, and their defensive frailties were punished again shortly afterwards.
Awoniyi was brought down in the penalty area as Forest attacked down the same flank, and the referee awarded a spot-kick after a VAR review.
Igor Jesus stepped up and converted confidently to double the visitors’ advantage.
The home side were handed an opportunity to get back into the game before the break when they won a penalty following a collision in the box.
However, Cole Palmer’s effort was saved, summing up a frustrating first half for Chelsea.
Forest carried their momentum into the second half and extended their lead shortly after the restart.
Substitute Morgan Gibbs-White played a key role, delivering a low cross that Awoniyi finished from close range to claim his second goal of the match.
Chelsea continued to struggle to create clear chances, with their attacking play lacking cohesion and cutting edge.
The visitors remained organised and disciplined, limiting Chelsea to speculative efforts.
There were further interruptions due to injuries, including a concerning head collision that forced changes on both sides, disrupting any rhythm Chelsea were attempting to build.
The home side thought they had pulled a goal back earlier in the second half, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
They eventually scored in stoppage time through Joao Pedro. However, the late goal had little impact on the outcome, with Forest already in firm control.
The result marks another setback for Chelsea, who have now suffered a sixth consecutive league defeat.
Their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League have effectively been extinguished, with the gap to the top positions widening further.
The victory represents a significant step towards safety for Forest, opening up a gap above the relegation zone with only a few matches remaining.
The performance underlines the depth and resilience within the squad at a crucial stage of the season.
