How many points Manchester United need to guarantee Champions League qualification after huge Chelsea win

Manchester United took a big step towards securing Champions League qualification with an impressive 1-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday

The Red Devils came into the fixture without their four main defenders.

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez were both suspended, and Leny Yoro picked up a late injury.  Matthijs de Ligt hasn’t played since November because of a back issue.

Despite featuring Noussair Mazraoui and Ayden Heaven as emergency centre-backs, United managed to collect maximum points at Chelsea.

Matheus Cunha scored the decisive goal in the 43rd minute after being brilliantly set up by Bruno Fernandes.

Man Utd need six points to guarantee European qualification

The victory at Stamford Bridge means United have now stretched the gap to 10 points over Chelsea

Michael Carrick’s side are in an excellent position to secure a return to the Champions League.

United need to win their next two fixtures against Brentford and Liverpool to guarantee their place in the European competition.

Reaching 64 points means Chelsea wouldn’t be able to catch the Red Devils, even if they win all their remaining games.

Sunday, May 3, is the earliest date on which United can secure Champions League qualification.

They can achieve the feat earlier if the Blues lose their midweek game at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Given Chelsea’s poor form, they are likely to drop points at the Amex Stadium.
