Manchester United launch appeal over Lisandro Martinez’s controversial red card against Leeds

Manchester United have reportedly decided to appeal against Lisandro Martinez’s red card against Leeds United (the Telegraph).

The Argentine was controversially sent off in the second half of Monday’s home encounter for tugging Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair.

The referee missed the incident and VAR sent him to the pitchside monitor. Following a review, the official dismissed Martinez.

Manager Michael Carrick was unhappy with the red card, describing it as ‘absolutely shocking’. Carrick also hinted after the match that United would appeal the decision.

Martinez will miss the next three fixtures against Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool if the dismissal is upheld.

Harry Maguire is also at risk of missing Saturday’s home game against the Blues after being hit with an FA charge alleging improper conduct.

Carrick has made an immediate impact after taking over as interim manager, guiding the Red Devils to seven wins in 11 Premier League matches.

They are on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League, as they are third in the standings with six games remaining.

However, recent results have been less encouraging. United drew 2-2 at Bournemouth last month before falling to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Leeds on Monday.
