Real Madrid were defeated 2-1 by Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabeu Stadium on Tuesday.
Bayern made a bright start with Joshua Kimmich feeding Konrad Laimer on the edge of the box in the second minute, but he blazed the ball over the bar.
Alvaro Carreras made a goalline clearance to deny Dayot Upamecano from putting the visitors ahead.
Manuel Neuer was the first goalkeeper to be called into action, producing a brilliant save to keep out Kylian Mbappe’s effort.
The veteran German goalkeeper thwarted Vinicius Junior with a two-handed save moments later.
Federico Valverde threaded a ball through to Mbappe, but Neuer thwarted his effort.
Bayern broke the deadlock in the 41st minute following a brilliant team move, setting up Luis Diaz one-on-one with Andriy Lunin. He coolly converted the chance.
The Bavarians doubled their lead just after the restart. Carreras lost possession, allowing Michael Olise to set up Harry Kane, who side-footed past Lunin.
Olise skipped past Carreras to get into the box before aiming for goal, but Lunin comfortably gathered his effort.
Dayot Upamecano failed to deal with a ball over the top, allowing Vinicius to go through on goal. He failed to hit the target.
Neuer then made a stunning save to deny Mbappe as Madrid continued their push to get back into the contest.
The Frenchman halved the deficit in the 73rd minute, tapping into an empty net from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s low cross.
Jamal Musiala squandered a golden chance to restore Bayern’s two-goal cushion, failing to connect cleanly with Alphonso Davies’ cutback.
The result sets up an enthralling second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
