Southampton vs Arsenal: FA Cup semi-final spot on the line as Gunners continue treble chase

A place in the FA Cup semi-finals is at stake as Southampton and Arsenal renew hostilities in an exciting quarter-final tie at St Mary’s Stadium.

Saturday’s showdown on the South Coast kicks off at 8:00pm (UK) as the visitors bid to bounce back from March’s League Cup heartbreak.

Manchester City hindered the Gunners’ quadruple chase, with Nico O’Reilly’s second-half double inspiring the Cityzens to a 2-0 win in the Wembley showpiece last month.

Despite failing to clinch the mid-season trophy, Mikel Arteta hopes the League Cup disappointment will ‘fuel’ Arsenal’s season run-in, with a coveted treble still well within reach.

It will be exciting to see whether Southampton can defy the odds once again, just as they did against Fulham in the previous FA Cup round, when Ross Stewart’s last-gasp penalty fired them to a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage.

Herculean task

Southampton’s chances of replicating their run to the semi-finals in 2020/21 look slim on paper, yet three consecutive wins on the stroke of the international break have significantly boosted the squad’s morale ahead of this clash.

Those victories form part of the Saints’ eye-catching 14-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (W11, D3) that has put them firmly in contention for Premier League promotion.

However, there’s a clear reason why Southampton head into this fixture as underdogs, as they’ve won just one of their seven matches against Arsenal (D2, L4) since beating them the last time these sides met in the FA Cup in 2021.

On a more promising note, Tonda Eckert’s men have been a thorn in Arsenal’s side at St Mary’s, avoiding defeat in five of their last eight home meetings with the Gunners (W3, D2).

Another favourable outcome is not beyond the realm of possibility, given that the Saints are currently on a seven-game unbeaten home run (W6, D1), keeping five clean sheets in that sequence.

Recovery mission

After spending the international break licking their wounds, runaway Premier League leaders Arsenal will be keen to book another Wembley date here and immediately respond to their League Cup fiasco.

Lifting their first top-flight title since 2003/04 remains the Gunners’ highest priority, as the Daily Mirror underlined the difficulty of securing a historic treble amid a full-blown injury crisis at the Emirates Stadium.

As many as 11 Arsenal stars withdrew from their national teams due to injury, putting Arteta under immense pressure, as the North London giants vie for a record-extending 15th FA Cup triumph.

Confidence perhaps comes from the visitors’ outstanding 14-game unbeaten run on the road (W10, D4), as well as the fact that they’ve scored at least two goals in all three FA Cup ties this season.

Despite boasting one of Europe’s best defensive records this term, the Gunners have failed to keep a clean sheet in five of their last six away matches, something they will be keen to address on Saturday.

Matter of priorities

Southampton’s last FA Cup title came in 1975/76, but Eckert would rather extend that wait in favour of a swift top-flight return, with the Saints sitting on the periphery of the Championship play-off zone.

Securing Premier League promotion remains the club’s main focus, meaning their FA Cup ambitions could take a back seat. Indeed, any distraction at this crucial juncture could prove costly.

As for Arsenal, they’re on the verge of winning a long-awaited Premier League crown, yet a historic success is still on the cards, as they’ve reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

The Gunners will face Sporting CP in the first leg next week, and Arteta must carefully manage his squad after losing several first-team stars to injuries during the international break.

Nevertheless, it will take something special from Southampton to emerge victorious from this unfavourable tie.
