Newcastle United’s stance on Eddie Howe’s future after humiliating derby defeat

Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle United has been a topic of debate since their humiliating 2-1 loss to Sunderland last weekend

After the chastening 7-2 defeat at Barcelona, the Magpies suffered more embarrassment against their bitter rivals on Sunday.

Brian Brobbey’s dramatic 90th-minute winner secured a league double for Sunderland at St James’ Park.

Despite the damaging Tyne-Wear derby defeat, Howe has the club’s backing, per the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope

They are unwilling to make a managerial change with just seven games remaining this season.

Senior Newcastle figures, including chief executive David Hopkinson, sporting director Ross Wilson and performance director James Bunce, are all united in their backing of Howe.

The 48-year-old is one of the most successful managers in the history of the Tyneside club.

He saved Newcastle from relegation in his first season, before leading them to Champions League qualification in his second.

After a seventh-place finish in his third season, the team qualified for the Champions League again and also ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the League Cup

Newcastle have endured a difficult campaign in 2025/26. They are 12th in the Premier League after losing 13 of their 31 matches.

The Magpies are out of both domestic cups, while their Champions League journey ended last week after Barcelona triumphed 8-3 on aggregate.
